Inger Johanne Grytting has played a critical link between American art movements and the Norwegian art scene. The artist was born in Svolvær and moved to New York in 1972. For many years her Manhattan studio has served as a meeting place for visiting Norwegian artists and intellectuals. In 2011 several artists from this circle were featured in the exhibition Parallels at Northern Norway Art Museum. The exhibition focused on Norwegian art from the late modernist period. Grytting’s Parallels is an extension of that project and shows selected artists from Grytting’s circle – Jan Groth, Heidi Kennedy Skjerve and Thomas Pihl. The works are primarily from the Museum’s collections.
